Evergreen AL paralegal working with attorneyBest Wishes regarding your decision to enroll in a paralegal school near Evergreen AL and start your journey that will lead to a satisfying profession in legal services. Nevertheless, it’s crucial that you find the ideal school so that you will get the extensive training that you need to succeed. As you most likely know, the legal field is one of the fastest growing occupations in the United States, and a growing number of educational options are becoming available, both at school and online. But with numerous alternatives to choose from, where does one start? Some potential students begin by trying to find paralegal schools within traveling distance of their Evergreen residences. Of those alternatives, they search for the program with the lowest tuition. Although location and cost are very important considerations when selecting a college, they are not the only qualifiers you should consider. Things like the reputation and accreditation of the school must be taken into account too. Later in this article we will cover a list of questions that you must ask potential paralegal certificate schools so that you can evaluate and compare every one before making your selection. But before we do, let’s have a look at what a paralegal does and the instructional choices that are offered to earn either a paralegal certificate or degree.

What is a Paralegal and What Do They Do?

Evergreen AL law libraryParalegals and legal assistants basically both fill comparable job roles and functions, only with different titles. On the other hand, legal secretaries are not the equivalent of either of those two positions and are part of a separate job classification. Both paralegals and legal assistants help lawyers in Evergreen AL with a wide variety of job duties, including legal research, maintaining client files, communicating with clients, and drafting legal documents. Their particular job duties are relevant to the type of legal firm where they are employed. As an example, a legal assistant for a criminal law firm may assist with the logistics of a trial or transporting documents to court. In private firms, a paralegal’s work is normally billed hourly as are the lawyer’s. And just like attorneys, they must conduct themselves with a high degree of professionalism and comply with a strict code of professional ethics. As stated, their duties can be varied in support of the firms where they work, but some of their regular activities might include:

  • Researching and fact checking cases
  • Conducting research on pertinent cases and laws
  • Preparing correspondence and legal papers
  • Filing legal documents with opposing counsel or the court
  • Assisting attorneys prepare for trial and keep organized with their cases
  • Organizing and preserving legal files, documents and other records

With all of their responsibilities, the role of a Evergreen AL paralegal can be involved and rather challenging. However, what they are not legally allowed to do is offer legal counsel and advice or represent a client in a legal proceeding. But they are not confined to administrative or clerical functions more suited to the job of a legal secretary. Paralegals really are the main support systems for lawyers. And because they do so much of the legal preparation and ground work, lawyers have the ability to take on a much larger number of clients or cases than they could otherwise.

Paralegal Education and Certification

law books and Evergreen AL judge's gavelAs we previously covered, paralegals are basically the same as legal assistants, with paralegals perhaps having more professional sounding job titles. In any case, for either position the academic requirements and opportunities will be the same. The fastest means to launch your career in Evergreen AL as a paralegal is by earning a certificate, which may require as little as six months to complete. Many entry level positions do call for an Associate’s Degree, which furnish a more comprehensive education and can be acquired at many community colleges in 2 years. And if you are interested in an even more comprehensive education, 4 year Bachelor’s Degrees are offered as well. After you have earned either a degree or a certificate, you might choose to continue and obtain a certification. Although it is not a legal requirement in Alabama to work as a paralegal, certification can not only help improve your career opportunities, but help establish you as a professional also. A few of the highly respected certifying agencies in the profession are:

  • National Federation of Paralegal Associations
  • American Alliance of Paralegals
  • National Association of Legal Assistants
  • National Association for Legal Professionals

By graduating with a certificate or degree from an accredited school (we will discuss the benefits of accreditation later) and earning a certification, you will have taken two important first steps that will help guarantee your success as a paralegal in Evergreen AL.

Paralegal Online Schools

attending paralegal school online in Evergreen ALParalegal online programs have become more available and can be a good alternative for students in Evergreen AL looking for convenient access to classes as well as accommodating scheduling. Online schools can be especially appealing to students who keep working while earning a certificate or degree. As an additional advantage, online programs can often be less costly than on campus options. Even ancillary expenditures for such things as commuting or study materials can be minimized or eliminated. One caveat, not all online programs are accredited, which we will cover in more detail later. But at the very least accreditation helps ensure that the training you receive is of the highest quality. So check to make certain that the school and program you are thinking about are accredited by a highly regarded agency, for instance the American Bar Association. But if you are dedicated enough to attend classes in a less structured and conventional setting, then earning your degree or certificate online could be the right option for you.

Things to Ask Paralegal Schools

Now that you have a better understanding regarding what paralegals do and what educational choices are offered, you can start the undertaking of assessing Evergreen AL area schools. But since there are numerous programs available at junior and community colleges, in addition to vocational and trade schools, you must know what questions to ask in order to evaluate each one. This is particularly true if you include all of the online paralegal certificate and degree programs as well. If you are like most potential students, you will begin by searching for schools within driving distance and then comparing their tuition. But as we have already discussed, there are other significant issues to research as well, including accreditation and the reputation of the schools. So let’s take a look at some of the questions you should be asking the programs you are researching so that you can properly vet each one and make your final selection.

Is the Paralegal Training Accredited? The paralegal program and school that you enroll in should be accredited by a recognized organization such as the American Bar Association. If it is an online program, it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. Accreditation will not only help guarantee that the training you will get will be of the highest quality, but it will demonstrate to potential employers that you are a qualified professional as well. A number of Evergreen AL law firms will only employ entry level legal assistants that are graduates of an accredited school. Also, financial aid and student loans are usually obtainable only for accredited schools.

What’s the Program’s Reputation? Learn what the reputations and rankings are for the Evergreen AL paralegal programs you are looking at. This is of particular importance if you are entering the profession with no previous experience, since employers will need to make a decision based on the caliber of your training exclusively. Confirming that the school you pick is accredited is a good first step. Checking school rating reports, including those provided by U.S. News and World Report, can help confirm school quality of education and rankings as well. You can also call several law practices that you may have an interest in working for after graduation and ask what schools they suggest. Remember that even when a school is not among the most highly rated, its paralegal program may still have an outstanding reputation.

Does the Program Sponsor Internships? Internship programs offer students an opportunity to experience working in a law office or other legal enterprise while still in school. They can also present a means for students to begin establishing contacts within the Evergreen AL legal field. Find out if the paralegal programs you are evaluating provide internship programs, particularly in areas of the law that you have the most interest in pursuing upon graduation.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without help. Ask if the paralegal schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Alabama legal services employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Campus Located? Considering that laws differ from one state to another, it might be beneficial to choose a paralegal school located in the state where you plan to practice after graduation. Also, it will be important to build relationships in the local legal community, perhaps through an internship program. This is even more justification to obtain your education in the community where you want to work. Also, if you go to classes at a community college, most require a higher tuition for students that reside outside of their districts. So you might wish to initially look at those schools that are within your Evergreen AL local area.

How Much is the Entire Expense? Paralegal schools can vary in cost depending on the credential received and the amount of training provided. However, tuition will not be the only cost for your education. Don’t forget to include the cost of books, supplies and commuting to classes to your budget as well. Financial assistance may be accessible to help offset part of the expense, so be sure to consult with the school’s financial aid office to find out what is offered in Evergreen AL. Naturally if you opt to attend an online school, some of these added expenses, such as for commuting, might be decreased or eliminated.

Do the Classes Accommodate your Schedule? Many paralegal students continue working while getting their training and need flexibility in class scheduling. If you can solely attend weekend or evening classes near Evergreen AL, make sure classes are offered at those times. Additionally, if you can only attend on a part-time basis, confirm that the school you select provides that option. Last, find out what the protocol is for making-up classes missed as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
